The Cape York Safari is a 12 day all overland camping safari that explores one of Australia's last great wilderness regions.  Highlights of this all overland 4WD safari include Cape Tribulation, Cooktown, Lakefield National Park, Weipa, Fruit Bat Falls, Musgrave Station and Twin Falls.  Camp under the stars (erect own tent) and enjoy helping with the camp meals along with your like-minded fellow travellers (10 nights erect your own tent and 1 night accommodation with ensuite facilities).  This tour operates with a of 24 passengers.

Itinerary


Day 1 Cairns to Cooktown (BLD)

After an early morning pick up from selected Cairns accommodation your adventure begins. Travelling north along the scenic Captain Cook Highway, through the World Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest meets the reef.  Then making our way along the jungle shrouded Bloomfield Track (road conditions permitted), stopping off at the unique Lion's Den Hotel, and the mysterious Black Mountain, arriving at the old gold port of Cooktown, where we visit Captain Cooks Landing. Overnight in Cooktown - ensuite facilities.

Day 2 Cooktown to Lakefield (BLD) (ST)

This morning we explore the old gold port of Cooktown. Visit the Cooktown Museum (optional extra) and Captain Cooks Landing.  Heading west into the outback, making our way over the Battle Camp Range. We stop at the Old Laura Homestead, before travelling on to our overnight camp in Lakefield National Park (road conditions permitted).


Day 3 Lakefield N.P. to Archer River (BLD) (STL)

Lakefield National Park, a haven for the many birds and animals of this area. Lagoons, billabongs and wide river lakes are home to both fresh and saltwater crocodiles.
Stopping off at the historic Musgrave Telegraph Station and the frontier gold town of Coen. We camp tonight at the picturesque Archer River.


Day 4 Archer River to Iron Range N.P. (BLD) (BcT)

This morning we visit the old Wenlock Gold Fields, an abandoned mining town, showing relics of Cape York's history. After morning tea we make our way to the East Coast to explore the Iron Range National Park (weather and road conditions permitting), Chili Beach, and Portland Roads community, which once serviced the Gold Fields and WW II airfield.

Overnight camp in Iron Range National Park (the largest remaining area of lowland rainforest in Australia) and home to the Eclectus Parrot, the rare Palm Cockatoo cuscus, and green python.


Day 5 Iron Range to Bramwell Station (BLD) (ST)

After an early morning start we make our way back to the main road. We cross the picturesque Pascoe River, before making our way to our overnight camp at a true blue Aussie Cattle Station, Bramwell Station.


Day 6 Weipa to Bramwell to Fruitbat Falls & Seisia (BLD) (STL)

This morning we travel north travelling along part of the Old Telegraph Track to arrive at Fruit Bat Falls for lunch. Relax, swim, and enjoy this unique area with its enchanting waterfall.

Then northwards across the Jardine River, to arrive at Cape York! We will be staying at Seisia, which is ideally located for our next few days, being in walking distance from the Seisia Wharf, the departure point for the ferry to Thursday Island and a famous fishing spot


Day 7 Thursday Island (BD)

A free day! After breakfast, you have the following options (own expense):

· Catch the ferry to Thursday Island, maybe join a guided bus tour

· Spend the day at Seisia, fishing (hand lines available) or stroll along the beach

 

Day 8 Cape York to Somerset (BLD) (STL)

An unforgettable day! Stand at the very top of mainland Australia, we then visit Somerset (road conditions permitted), once the home of the legendary Jardine family and government outpost established in 1864. We have lunch on the palm fringed Anchorage Beach, which overlooks the Albany Passage.  A walk on the beach will complete your day before returning to base.


Day 9 Seisia to Twin Falls (BLD) (BcT)

Departing the Top End, southward bound, we re-cross the Jardine River. We travel along the upper section of the Old Telegraph Track, en route to Twin Falls, with its enchanting waterfalls and rock pools, 'Paradise in Cape York'. An early arrival allows plenty of time to enjoy a refreshing swim and view the pristine falls.


Day 10 Twin Falls to Weipa (BLD) (STL)

A southerly run through the wilderness with all its varied landscapes to cross the Wenlock River. We head for the shores of the Gulf of Carpentaria and our overnight stop at Weipa beachfront Campground, with its view over Albatross Bay. This afternoon you may wish to take an informative tour of the Weipa mining operation (own expense) or just relax by the pool.

Day 11 Weipa to Musgrave (BL) (ST)

We continue south, stopping off at the picturesque Archer River, then on to the historic frontier gold town of Coen, before arriving at our camp at the Old Musgrave Telegraph Station.


Day 12 Musgrave to Cairns (BL)

This morning we visit the Quinkan Cultural Centre (admission at own expense), before heading towards the East Coast on the last leg of our journey. We will arrive in the late afternoon in Cairns.

DEPOSIT: A non refundable deposit of $500 per person is required with booking.  For booking tours that are departing in less then 90 days, full and immediate payment is required.

FINAL PAYMENT: Final payment is due no later then 90 days prior to departure. 

CANCELLATION FEES

Bookings cancelled more than 90 days prior to tour departure - loss of deposit paid.
Cancellation between 90 and 60 days prior to tour departure - 50% cancellation fee of total tour cost.
Cancellation between 59 and 31 days prior to tour departure - 75% cancellation fee of total tour cost.
